Beyond These Times: Lessons from the Future

Chicago—February 10, 2012—Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) presents the educational forum series Beyond These Times: Lessons from the Future in a continued partnership with National Louis University (NLU) and Golden Apple on February 27 and March 26, 2012 from 6:30–8 p.m. in CST's Courtyard Theater. The free public forums are an extension of last year's series, Chicago in These Times, and feature the country's foremost leaders in education policy and practice, including: Simon Fraser University's Dr. Kieran Egan as the keynote guest of Beyond These Times: The Changing World on February 27; and National Academy of Education's Dr. James Paul Gee as the keynote guest of Beyond These Times: The Changing Mind on March 26. Both inter-generational discussions will explore the changing role of the educator, the impact of technology, and what will be required to prepare teachers and students for the future.

All three organizations partnering for Beyond These Times are celebrating important milestones in their history: Chicago Shakespeare Theater is in the midst of its 25th Anniversary Season, Golden Apple just turned 25 and National Louis University marks its 125th year. CST's continued collaboration with NLU and Golden Apple is part of CST's strong and continuing commitment to students and teachers. Since its establishment in 1991, CST's Team Shakespeare education program has served more than 1 million students and teachers—making Chicago Shakespeare Theater one of the nation's largest providers of performing arts-in-education theater programming.
Dr. Kieran Egan, the featured guest of Beyond These Times: The Changing World on February 27, is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, and the founder and director of the Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG). He is the author of more than twenty books, including The Future of Education: Reimaging Our Schools from the Ground Up (American Association of Colleges for Education Outstanding Book Award), and The Educated Mind: How cognitive tools shape our understanding. In 1991 he received the Grawemeyer Award in Education. In 1993 he was elected as the first person in Education to the Royal Society of Canada. In 2000 Dr. Egan was elected as a Foreign Associate member of the (U.S.A.) National Academy of Education. In 2001 he was appointed to a Canada Research Chair in Education, won a Killam Senior Research Scholarship, and in 2011 was made an American Educational Research fellow. His books have been translated into more than a dozen European and Asian languages.
Dr. James Paul Gee, the featured guest of Beyond These Times: The Changing Mind on March 26, is the Mary Lou Fulton Presidential Professor of Literacy Studies in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction at Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton College of Education. He is a member of the National Academy of Education. Dr. Gee's most recent books deal with video games, language, and learning, including What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy and Good Video Games and Good Learning. His most recent book is Good Video Games and Good Learning: Collected Essays (2007). Dr. Gee has published widely in journals in linguistics, psychology, the social sciences and education.
Moderators for Beyond These Times are Silvia Rivera, the general manager of WRTE 90.5 FM Radio Arte (February 27), and Sylvia Ewing, a former correspondent and producer for WBEZ 91.5 FM (March 26). Additional panelists include: Marcus Arthur Campbell, director for student supports and racial equity and soon-to-be associate principal for academic affairs and student supports at Evanston Township High School; Luke Carman, 6th grade teacher of Codeworlds (Math/Writing) and Being, Space and Place (Social Studies/Language Arts) at CICS ChicagoQuest; Nancy Nassr, ChicagoQuest teacher and former director for the Summer Writers' Workshop at the University of Chicago; Anita Orozco-Huffman, 6th-8th grade special education teacher and AUSL mentor at National Teachers Academy; and Nancy Serrano, 6th grade bilingual English language arts teacher at Hernandez Middle School.
