Arts are for All

Live theater is an opportunity for all of us to come together, share stories, and celebrate our shared humanity. Chicago Shakespeare Theater strives to create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for all to experience our performances and programs—and we look forward making your visit unforgettable. View our Enhanced Performances schedule below.

Let us know how we can assist by contacting the Box Office at 312.595.5600, email [email protected], or use our Customer Service Portal.

Our Services

For those with Mobility needs:

  • Accessible parking spaces are in the Navy Pier garage, right next to the elevator that takes you to our lobby. Use Chicago Shakespeare’s dedicated parking entrance, which opens 2 hours before the performance.
  • All public restrooms are accessible to patrons with mobility needs.
  • A courtesy wheelchair is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Wheelchair accessible seats, swing-arm aisle seating, and areas that can be accessed without using stairs are available. If booking by phone, let us know your preferences and our team will happily work with you to find the best seats to accommodate your needs.

For those who are Deaf or hard of hearing:

  • Both FM Assistive Technology and T-Coil enabled Listening Devices are offered in all three of our performance spaces. These are available to use free of charge—simply pick one up at the Box Office before the performance, and return it there after the show. FM assistive listening devices can be used with your own headphones, or a pair of over-the-ear headphones will be provided by the theater. Note, Chicago Shakespeare Theater does not currently utilize a LOOP system for our assistive listening technology.
  • Open-captioned performances feature a screen, adjacent to the stage, on which a text display of the words and sounds heard during a play are synced live with the action taking place.
  • American Sign Language-interpreted performances have one to two interpreters seated in front of the stage, positioned to offer the best sight lines for you to follow the interpretation and the actors’ performances.

For those who are Blind or have low vision:

  • Large print programs are available at all performances. Our Front of House and Box Office teams can provide you with a copy upon request.
  • Audio Description performances offer spoken narration of a play’s key visual elements delivered during natural pauses in the action, so you are still able to enjoy the actors’ voices. Pick up a headset at the Box Office before the performance, and return it there after the show.
  • When available, optional Touch Tours before the show provide the opportunity for you to experience firsthand a production’s design elements, and familiarize yourself with some of the actors’ voices.
  • Braille Programs are available for most performances. Our Front of House and Box Office teams can provide you with a copy upon request.

Additional services available:

  • Single-occupancy/gender-neutral restroom options are accessible by elevator: for The Yard, it is on the Lower Gallery level; for the Courtyard and Upstairs, it is on 5th Floor. Our Front of House team can help you locate the nearest one.
  • Service animals are welcome to accompany patrons. When purchasing your ticket, let the Box Office know, and we’ll find the most convenient seats for your needs.
  • Closer to the first performance of each production, our website will have audience notices that indicate how light and sound effects are used. Upon arrival to the theater, we encourage you to connect with our Front of House team, who can provide you with details on exactly when in the show the effects take place. If you need to step out of the theater, TV monitors and free-standing seats are available to allow you to still view and hear the performance.
  • On dates listed as Sensory Friendly, aspects of the performance, including lights, sound, and audience engagement, are adjusted to create a comfortable and safe environment for patrons with sensory sensitivities. Noise-reducing headphones and sensory tools will be available, along with space for audience members to take breaks as needed.
