Gale Edwards, one of Australia’s leading and most acclaimed international theater directors, is a resident of Sydney and London. Her American productions include: The White Devil, Don Carlos (Brooklyn Academy of Music); Hamlet, Richard III, Titus Andronicus, Edward II (Shakespeare Theatre Company); Macbeth (Oregon Shakespeare Festival); and Jesus Christ Superstar (Broadway). UK productions include: The Taming of the Shrew, The Duchess of Malfi, Don Carlos, The White Devil (Royal Shakespeare Company); Fortune’s Fool starring Alan Bates, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice (Chichester Festival); The Far Pavilions, Saint Joan (West End); Maria Stuarda (The English National Opera); and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Aspects of Love (West End and UK Tour). Australian productions include: God of Carnage, Arcadia, Coriolanus, Saint Joan (Sydney Theatre Company); King Lear, The Winter’s Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, The Glass Menagerie (The S.A. Theatre Company); The Tempest, Uncle Vanya (M.T.C.); A Doll’s House (Belvoir Street); The Shaughraun (Q.T.C. and on Australian tour); Nixon in China (Adelaide Festival); and The Rosenkavalier (New Zealand Arts Festival), among many others. Australian Opera credits include The Magic Flute and Sweeney Todd (Australian Opera). Her numerous awards include: the 2000 Centenary Medal; Australian Export Award; Convocation Medal (Flinders University); two Sydney Helpmann Awards; four Melbourne Greenroom Awards; two “Mo” Awards; three Sydney Critics’ Circle Awards, most recently for best direction of Festen for Sydney Theatre Company; an International Emmy Award; and two nominations for the coveted Helen Hayes Award. Ms. Edwards has just finished her first Australian feature film, A Heartbreak Away, which will have its international release in 2011.
