Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington, DC. His first band, The Washingtonians, played at NYC’s The Kentucky Club in the mid-’20s, where he wrote his first musical, The Chocolate Kiddies. In 1924, Ellington made his first recording, “Choo Choo (I Gotta Hurry Home).” His first big hit, “Mood Indigo” (1930), made him a household name. His subsequent compositions, “Solitude,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and more spread the legend of The Duke around the world. Ellington continued to compose and tour until his death on May 24, 1974.
