Theatrical magic and musical masters blend to introduce young audiences to the performing arts in a fourty-five minute family concert. William Bolcom’s staged Fairy Tales—including The Fisherman and His Wife, The Frog Prince, Jorinda and Joringel, and The Hare and the Hedgehog—give children the opportunity to discover, up-close, how individual instruments are played, how they play together, and to all of the joys of live performance. These tales are based on stories by the Brothers Grimm. Also on the program are excerpts from the Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten, composer of the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Based on music from Britten’s childhood, it also was used extensively in the musical score for the commercial film, Moonrise Kingdom. At 11:00 a.m. on both days, performers are available for autographs and pictures in the lobby, while young musicians demonstrate and answer questions about the featured instruments.
A CST family production best enjoyed by ages 4 and up.
The Chicago Chamber Musicians have become the city's leading chamber music organization, sharing the joy of music with thousands every year.
