Welcome

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to welcome you to Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s 30th Anniversary Season—an extraordinary series of plays and players. Shakespeare’s influence continues to amaze and inspire us in the midst of our yearlong celebration of his legacy, Shakespeare 400 Chicago. This year, as you know, we are taking a journey through Shakespeare’s history plays in Tug of War—a tribute to the playwright’s prescience. And now, we bring you a special season of work that amplifies Shakespeare’s relevance and connects us to the world.

Your 2016/17 Season includes everything from a theatrical production of the Oscar-winning movie Shakespeare in Love to The Complete Deaths, featuring the UK’s Spymonkey. There’s a striking, Shakespearean view of future history in King Charles III; and a comedic romp of romance denied and passion declared in Love’s Labor’s Lost. These plays have been selected to challenge, entertain and even surprise you.

The inspiration of the greatest playwright in the English language fuels our commitment to the playwrights of our time. This season, new work will be realized in the production of a Chicago Shakespeare commission: I will direct The Book of Joseph, a revelation of bravery, tenacity and love in the face of family secrets.

Whichever package of plays you choose and special engagements you add to your series, we look forward to having you with us for this exciting anniversary season.

Welcome back!

Barbara Gaines
Artistic Director
