A favorite part of my job is putting together a complete season of heart-stirring artistry that all of Chicago can enjoy. We will finish up the 2018/19 Season this spring with SIX, an electrifying new musical uniting the legendary six wives of King Henry VIII. Joining forces in a celebration of empowerment, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr shine a spotlight on their stories—so much richer than our history lessons lead us to believe. Chicago Shakespeare will be the first to stage SIX following its runaway hit on London’s West End, in The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare.
Originally slated to appear in the 2019/20 Season, SIX has been rescheduled into the timeframe of the previously announced world premiere musical, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which has been postponed due to the untimely death of our friend, Director Rachel Rockwell. Rachel was an integral, creative force behind this new musical’s development, so our team concluded that, at a later date, we can produce the show that Rachel envisioned, and we wanted to bring to the stage.
Chicago Shakespeare is dedicated to offering a wide range of creative endeavors, from Shakespeare’s glorious canon and other classics to new works and great musical theater, and the opportunity to present this song-filled celebration thrills us.
Tickets for SIX will go on sale January 15, 2019, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Theater for this North American Premiere.
Sincerely,
Barbara Gaines
Artistic Director
