Performance History

The Madness of George III premiered on November 28, 1991 in the Lyttleton theatre of the Royal National Theatre, South Bank, London. Directed by Nicholas Hytner (now artistic director of the National), the original production followed its London run with a tour of both the UK and the US. It enjoyed a second run at the National in 1993, and was presented in Greece and Israel the following year.

In 1994, playwright Alan Bennett adapted George III for the screen. Hytner returned to direct and many of the original cast members appeared in the film. It premiered as "The Madness of King George" December 28, 1994 (US). The film adaptation received an Academy Award for Best Art Direction and was nominated for three others, along with several British Academy Film Awards and honors at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.

Other notable UK productions include a 2003 stint at West Yorkshire Playhouse & Birmingham Repertory Theatre featuring Michael Pennington, and a new touring production that opens in September 2010, the first UK tour since the original National production. George III will also be making an appearance at the Old Globe in San Diego, CA in Summer 2010 as part of their festival season.
