From 1987 to 1991 Mr. Khalezin was the Design Director and Co-founder of the Minsk Alternative Theatre. From 1994 to 2000 he worked as Editor-in-chief at The Name, The News and Our Freedom newspapers, all shut down by the Belarusian government for political reasons. In March 2005, together with his wife Natalia Kaliada, he founded Belarus Free Theatre; the company has since performed on five continents. Mr. Khalezin’s many plays include his one-man show Generation Jeans, which has gone on to be performed around the world more than 100 times. He is also the author of over 300 publications in both the Belarusian and international press. His shows have received rave reviews from The New York Times, The Guardian, Chicago Tribune, Le Monde and the Los Angeles Times, and have been nominated for a Drama Desk Award and received an OBIE Award. Mr. Khalezin has been arrested many times and was recognized as a “Prisoner of Consciousness” by Amnesty International.
