Spotlight on Arts Education in Chicago

This year, CPS Shakespeare! participants explore Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ensemble member Melany identifies text clues in her script.

  CPS Shakespeare! students and teachers work side-by-side to engage with Shakespeare’s challenging texts, improving student’s literacy skills and building confidence. The CPS Shakespeare! ensemble rehearses for more than 100 hours alongside members of CST’s Education team and with CPS Shakespeare! assistant director and CPS English teacher Sandra Shimon.

Featuring 26 students and 9 teachers from 10 CPS schools across Chicago, the CPS Shakespeare! ensemble warms up with vocal and physical exercises during rehearsal for A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM.   CST Director of Education and Communications Marilyn Halperin has guided CPS students and teachers for nine years in productions of Othello, Hamlet, The taming of the Shrew, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet.

 
     

The intergenerational ensemble works together over an intensive five-week rehearsal process to stage its unique and personal vision of Shakespeare’s story. CPS teacher Ed Cisneros and his student Cierra immerse themselves in text work. >
