Bringing Shakespeare to Life in Classrooms Throughout the Midwest
Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s commitment to Chicago’s students has been realized over the past two decades by working side-by-side with teachers to develop creative tools that engage readers at any ability level. Today, CST’s holistic educational model—which combines access to professional productions, intensive professional development for English teachers, and direct mentorship of teens attending Chicago Public Schools—has contributed to the academic achievement of more than one million students. A highlight of the past season, Chicago Shakespeare Theater became the first-ever arts organization to receive the Shakespeare Steward Award, bestowed by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. CST’s Education Department was recognized for its innovative teaching of Shakespeare in American classrooms and twenty-year service as a partner in literacy to Chicago Public Schools.
