Arthur Laurents Tony Award-winning writer-director, is considered by many to be American theater's greatest librettist. Throughout his career, he penned such notable musicals as: West Side Story; Gypsy; Anyone Can Whistle; Do I Hear a Waltz?; Hallelujah, Baby! and Nick & Nora. In addition, Laurents was also known for being an acclaimed screenwriter, playwright and director. Screenplay credits include: The Snake Pit; Rope; Caught; Anastasia; Bonjour Tristesse; The Way We Were; and The Turning Point. Playwriting credits include: Home of the Brave, The Time of the Cuckoo, A Clearing in the Woods, Invitation to a March, The Enclave, Big Potato, Two Lives, The Radical Mystique, My Good Name, Claudia Lazlo, Attacks on the Heart and Jolson Sings Again. Directing credits include: I Can Get It for You Wholesale, Invitation to a March, Anyone Can Whistle, The Enclave, The Madwoman of Central Park West, Birds of Paradise, three revivals of Gypsy (starring Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and Patti LuPone in the title role), and La Cage aux Folles (1984 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical). In 2010, he established an award for emerging playwrights, to be funded through the Laurents-Hatcher Foundation.
