Overview

Being Shakespeare is a biographical play. It uses a combination of narration and extracts from Shakespeare's own works to tell the story of his life. The play is framed by Jaques's famous speech from As You Like It, as Jonathan Bate takes us through the seven ages of William Shakespeare. It is also haunted by the presence of Old Hamlet's ghost; or perhaps by Shakespeare himself, asking us to remember him.
