Marilyn Halperin with Michael Dobson, Director of The Shakespeare Institute
|
In August, The Shakespeare Institute hosted CST Director of Education and Communications Marilyn Halperin for a week-long retreat dedicated to the exploration of creative approaches to the scholarly study of Shakespeare’s works. During her time in England, Ms. Halperin worked closely with Professor Michael Dobson, Director of The Shakespeare Institute, and Dr. Jacquelyn Bessell, one of the world’s foremost experts on the study and performance of Shakespeare and classical drama. The Shakespeare Institute is the University of Birmingham’s unique center for the postgraduate study of Shakespeare’s works, times and modern relevance. Based in Stratford-up-Avon, the Institute is dedicated to the academic study of the Bard’s texts, further supported in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s artistic exploration and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s historical preservation and contextualization.
CST was proud to engage in this creative exchange with a renowned peer institution, which also served to strengthen the cultural bond between Chicago and one of its global Sister Cities, Birmingham, England. In October, Professor David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, will visit Chicago as part of this continued effort to promote international partnership and sharing of best practices among the world’s diverse urban communities. While here, in addition to visiting Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Professor. Eastwood will engage with some of our city’s other leading cultural and academic institutions, and will deliver the keynote address at the British Council Higher Education Series Conference: Driving Development: Higher Education in the New Economic Order.
