Production History

a hip-hop adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello
written, directed and music by GQ and JQ
developed with Rick Boynton

Upstairs at Chicago Shakespeare
March 12–June 15, 2013

produced by Chicago Shakespeare Theater
and Richard Jordan Productions Ltd

“Highly recommended! To cut to the chase: the 90-minute, lightening-fast, hip-hop version of Shakespeare's tragic tale is absolutely brilliant and immense fun!” Chicago Sun-Times

A killer show...the Q Brothers’ best yet! Their writing is superb: sardonic, wise, smart, funny and, of course, mostly in rhyming couplets.” Chicago Tribune

The only other English language presentation will be Shakespeare's Globe's production of Henry V. Shakespeare's plays have been translated into every major living language and there is a long tradition of his plays being performed around the globe in people's own vernacular. The multi-lingual presentation includes languages and companies that span six continents such as the National Theatre of China's Richard III; Belarus Free Theatre's King Lear; from Bangladesh, Dhaka Theatre's The Tempest; a Zulu presentation of Venus & Adonis; The South Sudan Theatre Company's Cymbeline; and from Kyoto, Japan, Chiten's Coriolanus.
