Production History

Barbara Gaines (Director/Artistic Director) is the founder of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where she has directed more than 30 of Shakespeare’s plays. Her work has been honored with Jeff Awards for Best Production (The Comedy of Errors, Hamlet, The Tale of Cymbeline and King Lear) and for Best Director (The Comedy of Errors, The Tale of Cymbeline and King Lear). In 2005, Ms. Gaines was awarded the prestigious Honorary OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in recognition of her contributions strengthening British-American cultural relations. She received the 2007 Public Humanities Award from the Illinois Humanities Council this spring, and is the recipient of the 2004 Spirit of Loyola Award. Ms. Gaines serves on the Shakespearean Council of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and is a Life Trustee of Northwestern University. She is a member of the Cultural Affairs Advisory Board for the City of Chicago and has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Mark Bailey (Set and Costume Design) returns from England to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he previously designed Hamlet. Other US credits include: Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Los Angeles Opera). International credits include: The Importance of Being Earnest (Toronto/London); The Pretenders (National Theatre of Norway); The Double Dealer and The Seagull (Dublin, Ireland); and Ariadne Auf Naxos (Maggio Musicale Florence and Opera de Lausanne). Mark is an Associate Artist at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Wales, under the direction of Terry Hands, where his many designs include King Lear, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Equus. His credits in London’s West End include: Iolanthe, Rat Pack Confidential, The Winslow Boy, Which Witch, Present Laughter, Mack and Mabel, Legal Fictions and, most recently, Rent. Mr. Bailey’s credits in musical theater and opera include: The Gondoliers, Fiddler on the Roof, Irma la Douce, Into the Woods, Cabaret, as well as Melody on the Move and Snow Queen (English National Ballet); The Threepenny Opera (Royal National Theatre) and Carmen (Royal Opera, Linbury Theatre).

Philip S. Rosenberg (Lighting Design) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where his credits include Edward II, Amadeus and Cymbeline. This past season’s regional theater credits include: She Loves Me (Huntington Theatre); Shanghai Moon, The Lady in Question (Bay Street Theatre); and Bury the Dead (Illinois State University). Philip has spent much of the last 10 years as an associate lighting designer on Broadway, where his credits include: Shrek, November, The Pirate Queen, The Caine Mutiny Court- Marshall, The Odd Couple, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Bombay Dreams, The Graduate, Man of La Mancha, Hairspray, The Crucible, 42nd Street, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Music Man, The Civil War, On the Town and Triumph of Love.

Lindsay Jones (Sound Design and Composition) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater for his 13th production, including The Comedy of Errors, Cymbeline, and Henry IV Parts 1 and 2. Other Chicago credits include: Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Northlight Theatre and Lookingglass Theatre Company. Regional credits include: American Conservatory Theatre, South Coast Repertory, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Arena Stage, The Old Globe, and Hartford Stage. Off-Broadway credits include The God of Hell, In the Continuum, 1001, String of Pearls, Beautiful Thing among many others. International credits include productions in Austria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Scotland and with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England. He is the recipient of four Jeff Awards, an Ovation Award, a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, two ASCAP Plus Awards and the Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award. Recent TV/Film scoring credits include the pilot Family Practice for Sony Pictures/ Lifetime Television and A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin (2006 Academy Award winner, Best Documentary, Short Subject) for HBO Films.

Mike Tutaj (Projection Design) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he previously designed Romeo y Julieta. He has been designing multimedia for theater in Chicago since 2002. Recent Chicago credits include: Jon (Collaboraction); I Do, I Do (American Theatre Company); Martin Furey’s Shot (Jeff Award); Tesla’s Letter’s, and Fiorello! (Timeline Theatre Company); Misamerica and Columbinus (Raven Theatre); I Sailed with Magellan (Victory Gardens); Hana’s Suitcase and The Red Kite Project (Chicago Children’s Theatre); Greensboro: A Requiem (Steep Theatre Company); and Our Enemies (Silk Road Theatre Project). He is a company member of Barrel of Monkeys, with whom he performs and designs.

James Savage (Special Effects Design) is head of the sound department at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he previously designed the special effects for Cymbeline. Chicago Shakespeare sound design credits include: CPS! Macbeth, Willy Wonka, Funk it Up About Nothin’, Passion, How Can You Run with a Shell on Your Back?, Hamlet, A Flea in Her Ear, The Princess and the Pea, Seussical the Musical, Peter Pan, A Little Night Music, Much Ado About Nothing. Other Chicago credits include the sound design for Bernie Salins’ Murder in the Cathedral. He has served as the lead mix engineer with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Utah Shakespearean Festival.

Melissa Veal (Wig and Makeup Design) has designed wigs and makeup at Chicago Shakespeare for 30 productions, including: Edward II, Amadeus, The Comedy of Errors, Othello, Passion, Troilus and Cressida, The Three Musketeers, Hamlet, Hecuba, A Flea in Her Ear, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 (at CST and on tour to Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-upon-Avon), Much Ado About Nothing, Measure for Measure, The Merry Wives of Windsor, King John, The Molière Comedies, A Little Night Music, Rose Rage: Henry VI Parts 1, 2 and 3 (at CST and The Duke on 42nd Street), The Taming of the Shrew, Julius Caesar, and as wig supervisor for The School for Scandal. She worked with the Stratford Festival for 10 seasons, where she received four Tyrone Guthrie Awards, including the Jack Hutt Humanitarian Award. Other Canadian credits include work with Canadian Stage Company, Tarragon Theatre, Mirvish Productions and a longtime association with The Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. She was the 2007 recipient of the Hurckes Award for Artisans and Technicians.

Robin H. McFarquhar (Fight Choreographer) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where his credits include: The Comedy of Errors, Othello, Cymbeline, Troilus and Cressida, The Two Noble Kinsmen, Hamlet, A Flea in Her Ear, King John, Julius Caesar, Richard II, King Lear, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Antony and Cleopatra, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Richard III, Othello, Short Shakespeare! Romeo and Juliet (at CST and on NEA tour), Macbeth and Pacific Overtures. Other Chicago credits include: Carter’s Way, Lost Land, The Ballad of Little Jo, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, A Clockwork Orange, The Libertine, Time to Burn, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Time of Your Life and The Berlin Circle (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); and Richard II, All the Rage and Griller (Goodman Theatre). Other credits include work on Broadway, regional theaters throughout the country, international tours to England, Japan, Cyprus and Hungary, and the national tour of The Color Purple.

Phyllis E. Griffin (Vocal Coach) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where her credits include Cymbeline and Henry IV Parts 1 and 2. She is an Associate Professor at The Theatre School of DePaul University and serves as a professional vocal coach for theaters in Chicago. As a vocal coach, she has collaborated with Tennessee Williams on A House Not Meant to Stand, and with August Wilson on King Hedley II and Gem of the Ocean, all at The Goodman Theatre. She coached the cast for Regina Taylor’s play Drowning Crow and was enlisted by director Chuck Smith for I Am A Man, written by Professor Charles OyamO. Directing credits include DePaul University’s Bud, Not Buddy, opening in spring 2009 for Chicago Playworks.

Kevin Gudahl (Verse Coach) returns to Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where his past coaching credits include: Short Shakespeare! Macbeth, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Troilus and Cressida and The Comedy of Errors. Acting credits at Chicago Shakespeare include: The Comedy of Errors, King Lear, A Little Night Music, Julius Caesar, and the title roles in Antony and Cleopatra and Macbeth. He has taught at Northwestern University, Columbia College, DePaul University, Victory Gardens Studio and also for CST’s Classical Training program. Other Chicago credits include the Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, Writer’s Theatre, Marriott Theatre, Remy Bumppo Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre and Victory Gardens Theatre. International credits include Pacific Overtures at the Donmar Warehouse in London, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and five seasons with The Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada. Television credits include Early Edition (CBS), Crime Story (NBC) and The Untouchables. Film credits include While You Were Sleeping, Home Alone III and Baby On Board.
