The story of Aladdin as it is usually depicted in the West has evolved from the original manuscripts. Many readers are surprised to find that there is not only a genie of the lamp but also a genie of the ring, and no magic carpet in the original.

While adaptations of the stories in music, dance, theater and film are often presented for children, the stories were originally written for adults and include graphic violence and erotica. Andrew Lang adapted his 1918 The Arabian Nights Entertainments for more delicate sensibilities.
